Night Photography | Chicago, IL | With Bre
I am no expert when it comes to night photography, but one evening in Chicago, Bre and I took it on. It was really challenging and exciting. Bre, who is wonderful at photography, saw these lights off the map we were following. We proceeded to have an entire photo shoot surrounding them. Y’all, it was so cool. There was a softness about them that I wasn’t expecting. The minute I saw the back of the camera, I knew Bre had hit the jackpot!
If I do shoot at night, I will look for a single light source. That way I can control the shadows and highlights of the images. It makes really powerful portraits, and dramatic black and whites. Posing gets more challenging as you become limited to a little space with a single direction giving light. Bre was so creative with her posing despite the limitations. She had me pose directly in front, on the side, and even within the lights. I love the drama of having my face in the shadows of some of them. I normally always think to make the subject look into light, but seeing her do this, I was challenged to think outside the classic “window light” kind of technique. It’s also amazing how many different-looking photos we got in the same square foot area. Honestly, ALL creds to Bre, man!!! She killed it.
I hope these photos inspire you the way they did me. I will definitely be trying out some more night photography after this! Wish my buddy, Bre, lived in the same city so we could do it together!
